Trail tours with Foothills Trail Club and Buffalo Ornithological Featured < Back Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail Celebrates Earth Day Deborah Fenn Apr 14, 2023 Trail tours with Foothills Trail Club and Buffalo Ornithological Featured In observance of Earth Day on Saturday, April 22nd, Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail’s Springville-Concord Friends group is hosting three trail tours on the railbanked rail corridor. Each tour will depart from the Moose Lodge Pavilion, 13080 Buffalo Road in Springville. A 10:30 a.m. tour will be hosted by ECRT Friends leader Mary Carol Dearing; at 11:45 a.m. Chuck Mitchell, member of the Buffalo Ornithological Society will lead a group, and at 1:00 p.m. Chuck Feldman, incoming president of the Foothills Trail Club will depart with a third group of trail hikers. The length and duration of each guided hike will be determined by the leadership of each tour, depending on the desires of participants. Advance registration is not necessary. Come enjoy the sights and sounds of nature through the eyes of and ears of local experts as you learn more about current and future plans for ECRT’s 27-mile multi-use recreational trail. Our volunteers used some serious elbow grease to clean up and clear out a section of the Rail Trail between Lower East Hill and Rt. 240 in Colden. They cut back brush, cleared deadfall, trimmed weeds and collected trash. We have the BEST volunteers and Board members. Orchard Park Friends of the Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail (ECRT) got together for a group walk of the open trail section from Ellicott Road to Jewett-Holmwood Road on Saturday, March 25th. They met up with a good number of ECRT Board members, Railroad historians and other walkers and friends at the Orchard Park Train Depot for refreshments, a few trail etiquette reminders, and welcoming words by Mary Brummer, President of the ECRT organization. Local officials Matt Hartung, Deputy Mayor of Orchard Park Village, and Scott Honer, Orchard Park Town Councilman, were there to participate in the walk as well. Prior to heading out to the trail, Mary Brummer updated everyone with some highlights of ECRT’s recently finalized 3 year Strategic Plan for future development and enhancement of several sections of the rail corridor, particularly in the Orchard Park and West Falls neighborhoods, with much of the funding for the Orchard Park improvements coming from OP residents and supporters of the trail through a very successful fundraising drive throughout 2021-2022, culminating with the EA2EVL Fondo on October 1, 2022. Walkers were then loaded into volunteers’ cars and shuttled to the Ellicott Road trail entrance. The winds were gusting that morning, but the rains mercifully stopped for the duration of the hour-long outing! Everyone was by the stroll in nature and conversation with friends, old and new. Special thanks to the leader of the OP Friends of the Trail, Nicole Avitahl-Curtis, and her volunteer helpers for organizing this event. ECRT is grateful to all who support the trail by volunteering, donating, spreading the word to friends and supporting our efforts to improve outdoor recreational opportunities for everyone in our community. Debbie Stellrecht Jun 17, 2023 Multiuse trail now open from the Depot to Jewett-Holmwood Road. Thank you to ECRT volunteers and supporters who made it possible to open another 1.3 miles of multiuse recreational trail in the Village of Orchard Park on June 17th! What a gratifying day with so many incredible, supportive, positive people who loved being able to enjoy a sunny walk or ride on a beautifully surfaced, safe trail! The trail is now open from dawn until dusk daily for pedestrians and bicycles. Let's keep the trail safe for everyone A reminder that the trail is off limits to motorized vehicles. Violators will be prosecuted. If you see a motorized vehicle on the trail, please contact your local non-emergency police or sheriff office and provide a description of the vehicle and driver, the location and the direction of travel. The ride will venture down Route 240 through the fall foliage and rolling hills of Western New York and end with a celebration at the beautiful Holiday Valley. The best part: 100% of the proceeds benefit ECRT! Register today! This event has SOLD OUT for three years and raised $150,000 to support the ECRT trail. We've used those funds to remove rails and ties, improve drainage and resurface the first 1.3 miles of the trail starting at the Orchard Park Village Depot. In June of 2023 this beautiful section opened to the public, connecting to the 2 miles of natural surface trail open at Jewett Holmwood Road. ECRT to Share Results of Community Input at Celebration in Orchard Park on Dec. 10th < Back Learn the Results of ECRT Community Meetings Mary Brummer Nov 26, 2024 ECRT to Share Results of Community Input at Celebration in Orchard Park on Dec. 10th The Erie Cattaraugus Rail Trail (ECRT) organization invited area Southtowns residents to share their ideas about the 27-mile multiuse recreational trail at two community meetings in Orchard Park and Colden during the fall of 2024. SUNY Buffalo graduate students and faculty from the Urban Planning program facilitated these meetings and recorded the residents’ visions and concerns about the trail project. The information collected at these two community engagement meetings is intended to inform the design process as the recreational trail project continues. The UB personnel will present their collected information in a program that includes a series of vision boards illustrating various aspects of the trail project. “We are delighted that residents dedicated time to meet with us and share their ideas about the trail. Hearing all points of view helps us design the best trail for the community, and these vision boards provide a foundation for that design process,” said ECRT President Mary Brummer. All are welcome to attend this free community presentation and celebration, at the Orchard Park Community Activity Center , 4520 California Road, Orchard Park on Tuesday, December 10 from 6:30 – 8:30 pm .
